Venelin Shurelov is a set designer and visual artist who never gives in to conventional forms and strategies for creation. He specializes in multimedia and teaches in the Digital Arts Master’s program at the National Academy of Art, where he initiated an international digital arts festival. [DA Fest is organized by the National Academy of Art in Sofia and aims to present diverse artistic trends and practices in the fields of digital video, sound art, net art, multimedia performances, installations and other inter-disciplinary forms.]
Venelin Shurelov is also the creator of installations, performances and objects that have toured a number of European festivals – Drawing Machine, Homo Rotatio, Tabula Rasa, OrthoMan and Fantomat. The leitmotif in his work is the human body as it intersects with technology, and he likes to get the audience involved as an active participant. Venelin Shurelov founded the international art collective Via Pontica Art Group and the Subhuman Theater project, which explores the fragility of the human body, its borderline experiences and hybrid forms.
Over the last three years, together with the Slovenian art organization Zavod Exodos, he has been working on the Labyrinth of Art (Labirint umetnosti) project for a public park with trees planted by people from various corners of the world.
His latest project is called Man ex Machina. It will premiere at the Varna Summer International Theater Festival 2011, which will take place in Varna from June 1-12.

M: What is Man ex Machina? You’ve defined the genre as a hybrid between performance, talk and installation.

V: The hybridity applies to each of the individual elements in the project – it’s in the text, in the structure of the performance, in the character of the protagonist, in his behavior. The original idea was to create a performance/talk. It deals with the hybridity between the technological and the organic, and that’s why I decided that the protagonist should also be a hybrid. That’s how the structure emerged – a theoretical text and a character who is part of the story he is telling. The living element of the cyborg protagonist’s body is his legs. The upper part of his body consists of armor and a helmet –they are like shells inside which I’ve placed content that is different from the organic. The cyborg has a mechanical-electrical torso and head. The other key elements are the three monitors, which resemble portholes in some space journey. The hard part is to figure out the functionality of all the elements, otherwise they just seem like illustration.
M: You have always been intrigued by hybrid forms that carry some kind of supra-knowledge. Man ex Machina is precisely that. How did you come up with the title?
V: It plays off the well-known term Deus ex Machina. In the technological, humans saw the supernatural, which could be connected to the divine. They realized that the technological was supernatural not only because it was spectacular, but also because it enhanced their abilities. From the moment a man is born, he is concerned with improving his capabilities. This trajectory brings us closer to the divine as an ideal. I called my performance Man from the Machine because such technological enhancement, the upgrading of the human body, works towards the creation of a kind of prosthetic gods. Carried away by this trend, we turn into prosthetic gods. The rethinking of this tendency is what is important to me, focusing not so much on the euphoria of accomplishing the divine through the means of technology, but rather on extracting the essence of what humans are in the context of the technological. Besides creating a super-ideal of the human being, the technological may lead us to discover something else about human nature itself – with all its weaknesses, faults, pathologies, its non-humanity.
M: How would you describe the negative and the positive relationships between man and the technological?
V: This is the big question – the debate over whether we are endangered or blessed by this relationship. That is why I added the tagline: “Self-construction and self-destruction in the fantasy realm of the technological.” I wish I were able to give a more straightforward answer, but my response actually comes in the creation of new mythical figures, which I call “culturological actors” – ones that inform, but also subvert. Because of their complex, ambivalent nature, they manifest both the best and the worst in man. It is difficult to judge whether technology will destroy humanity or preserve it. Many fields of technology claim that they are developing in order to preserve human life, but if we take the case of genetic modification, for example, preservation also implies a modification of human existence. Are we ready to change ourselves in order to preserve our species? The performance tries to accumulate as many nuances in the understanding of this issue as possible, to sharpen our reflectiveness. And there is one more problem in the use of technologies: as much as they fascinate us with the opportunity to save, preserve, prolong and improve human life, this turns out to be the privilege of the rich alone. And that deepens social tension. There are two research programs that concerned with cybernization, the combining of human parts with technology. One of them is devoted to creating artificial life, creatures which behave like humans. The other searches for means to break intellect down into something that could be artificially constructed. Both programs have been very successful.

M: Perhaps the lack of a soul is at the root of the problem with these hybrid creatures, who exist at the intersection of the human and the technological. Isn’t the soul the one element technology cannot recreate?
V: There’s one very popular invention – the Writer, an android by Pierre Jauqet-Droz, which works on the principle of the music box. The little boy writes: “I do not think…do I therefore not exist?”, which is a paraphrase of Descartes’ famous statement. And again we arrive at the ambivalence of existence. The fact that these creatures were not born, but made, does not mean they do not exist. I use this is as part of the theatrical language of the performance. All the creatures I make – OrthoMan, Fantomat, the Drawing Machine, Tabula Rasa, Homo Rotatio – are “representers,” which in the language of theatricality become codes and pictograms, communicating important things. I try to put an equals sign between these creatures and the nature of the actor. That’s why it is stated in the performance that the actor’s body is a cyber body, it is a body outside the mundane, it takes on diverse personalities, diverse experiences, it overcomes time, space and gravity, it is capable of any transformation. To me, the question of whether they have a soul or not is not that central. It is more important that they exist and that those who have soul can discover in themselves something of their own spirituality, which actually makes them animate.

M: This is your first try at staging one of your cybernetic creatures in a classic theatrical environment.
V: I always try to gravitate away from the familiar schemes. So far I have done various things with performance elements, but this is indeed the first time I’ve come so close to theater. The new element is the static audience. We have a protagonist who has given up standard acting techniques, reduced here to the static presence of two legs. The performance can be broken down into separate elements and each of them could have a life of its own – the cyborg as an installation, the video as a film, the sound as a radio play. I am afraid, however, that the unfamiliar waters in which the performance churns might distance the audience.

M: Do you believe the audience needs advance preparation to be able to take in a performance like this?
V: I wish I could craft it in such a way that no preparation would be necessary. It is a matter of dosage and choosing how to deliver the information. I wish the audience would appreciate the fact that the one and only element the show builds on is mental activity. In Bulgaria, I do miss thought-oriented performances constructed with brain power. The other thing I miss in our theater is working on a particular theme, we have very few original works.

Cyber lecture "Self-construction and self-destruction in the fantasy realm of technology"

“Man ex Machina” is an intimate event, a mixture between installation, performance and lecture. It explores the interrelations between human beings and technology, which have lead to the creation of hybrids. These fantastic, supernatural beings mark the boundaries between the human and the technological, between being born and being made, between fact and fiction. A protagonist in the performance is such a creature – an eclectic object, created by new technologies and old mechanisms, the body of the artist and sophisticated electronics.

Мan еx Machina е камерно театрално представление, комбинация между инсталация, пърформанс и лекция.

В представлението централна тема са взаимоотношенията между човек и технологии. Тe провокират създаването на различни хибридни същества. Освен че маркират границите между човешко и технологично, родено и направено, факт и фикция, тези същества се явяват като суб-продукт на социалната, политическа, икономическа и културна ситуация.

Такъв е протагонистът в представлението. Той е сложен еклектичен обект, включващ нови технологии и стари механизми, тялото на артиста и софистицирана електроника. Той не е само пресичане между машина и организъм, но и конструкция, в която индивидуалното както и социалните перцепции и проекции, реалии и фикции се смесват заедно.

Какви са фантазиите на един киборг, как технологичното реализира човешките копнежи, как човек се самоизгражда и саморазрушава във фантазното пространство на технологичното?

Човекът от машината (Man ex Machina), така както Deus ex Machina в древногръцкия театър е подходящата фигура способна да даде отговор на тези въпроси.

Man ex Machina е своеобразен събирателен символ, изграден върху метафората човек – псевдочовек, но е разгледан през социализирането и театрализирането на мотива за човешкия двойник. Той е преход към проблемите на сценичната изразност със своята свръхестественост, зрелищност и функционалност.

Събиране и изваждане

Посвещавам на Илия Шурелов

Изложбата се състои от 24 рисунки, направени с молив върху амбалажна хартия. Те са създадени през месец август 2010 година, по време на престоя ми в ателиетата на Nordic Artists' Centre Dalsåsen, Норвегия.
Събирането и изваждането в серията рисунки тематично свързвам с появата и напускането на този свят, но и с това, което добавяме и премахваме от себе си. Работите са родени от емоционалната енергия натрупана от смъртта на близък човек. В центъра на рисунките присъства неизменно силует на човешки бюст, който е смесица между него и мен. Въпреки това фигурите в различните изображения са деперсонализирани, в тях живеят различни спомени и фикции, колкото лични, толкова и универсални. Образността в рисунките също така е свързана с интереса ми към аугментираното тяло, тялото хибрид, протезираното тяло. По този начин субектът в изображенията се смесва с различни обекти и така придобива нови значения. Значения приличащи на бълнуване, идващо понякога с тежестта на откровение, понакога с лекотата на цинична смешка.

The exhibition consists of 24 drawings, done in pencil on wrapping paper. They were created in August, 2010, during my stay in the Nordic Artists' Centre Dalsåsen workshops in Norway.
Addition and subtraction in this series of drawings are thematically related to coming to and leaving this world, but also to what we add and what we take off ourselves. These pieces came to life as a result of the emotional energy accumulated after the death of someone very close and dear to me. Invariably in the center of each picture there is a human bust that represents a mix of him and me. Nevertheless, each figure is depersonalized, full of different memories and fictions that are as much personal as universal, too. The imagery of the pictures is also connected to my interest towards the augmentative body, the hybrid-body, the prosthetic-body. This way the subject in the images mixes with variety of objects and acquires new meanings. Meanings that remind of a delirium, sometimes setting down with the burden of a revelation, other times coming with the easiness of a cynical joke.

A project by DAMA09 (Violeta Pavlova, Evgenia Sarbeva, Martin Petrov, Yulian Nevenov) – first-year students at the Academy, Digital Arts Master’s Programme. The installation is a result of a course work (The actor as an object, the object as an actor), assigned by Venelin Shurelov. Through theoretical and practical studies, the installation examines the interaction between human body and object, construction and projection, installation and action, in the border zone between the visual and performance arts. In this process, we use breath, separated from the human body, intensify it through electromechanical processes and use it as an element of the environment. With their breath, the visitors animate the dummy’s body.

Through the image of disabled creature I stake once more on the discourse on monstrosity. This is one of the specific ways in which boundaries between human and almost human declare themselves. Monsters serve not only to mark the border line, but also to signal the fragility of these boundaries. They are real monsters in their simultaneous demonstration and destruction of differentiation, by which culture separates the natural from artificial, human from non-human, normal from pathological. Their representative functions serve not only to describe and to communicate, but also to legitimate, reproduce and normalize or vice versa to subvert, refute and destabilize. Such representatives, as Donna Haraway called them, are the culturological actors. They serve as a critique of humaneness. My research work is focused on decoding their language and encoding it in creating new creatures.

In this installation Venelin Shurelov again offers himself as a subject for free experimentation by the audience. The comic and entertaining effect of the work predispose spectators to participate in it to the utmost. Old stove with a small pot on the hot plate that has something of the nostalgic charm of the silent films in which a small black and white man goes through thousands of ups and downs, as if the grim fate plays with him in the most cold-blooded and heartless way. Similar feeling is invoked also by this installation of Venelin Shurelov. Little man literally "boiling and seething" in art, or rather in a dummy dish. In that case the visitor enjoys a unique opportunity to cook an artist at a desired temperature.

Комичният и забавен ефект от работата предразполага максимално към съучастие в нея. Старата печка с малка тенджерка върху котлона, носи част от носталгичното очарование на немите филми, в които един малък черно бял човек преминава през хиляди перипетии, сякаш суровата съдба си играе с него по най-хладнокръвен и безсърдечен начин. Подобно е усещането и при тази инсталация на Венелин Шурелов. Малкият човек буквално “ври и кипи” в изкуството или по-скоро в бутафорно измайсторени ястия. Посетителят има рядката възможност да сготви един художник на желаната от него температура.

A Project by Venelin Shurelov, SubHuman Theatre

The sumptuous entertainment arranged to amuse the European elite in the 16th, 17th and 18th century have transformed, by employing the practices of anatomical theatre and the fantastic, precious and uncommon objects arranged like encyclopedic collections, the “cosmos” from a static plate for contemplation only into an occasion for dramatic research. Cabinets of curiosity(Kunstkammern, Wunderkabinet) of all sorts displaying minerals, engraved jewelry, insects in amber, butterflies, mummified ears of Egyptian bulls, Babylon bricks, antiquities, medals, coins, timepieces, astrolabes, compasses, prisms, mirrors, microscopes, telescopes, magical kaleidoscopes, camera obscruras, wax figures, intelligent machines, miraculous playthings and automata, made up what Samuel Quiccheberg defined, in his Inscriptiones vel Tituli Theatri(1565), as a theatre of the universe... In this universal theater, the visitors admire a variety of scenes not in dark auditoria but on the stage itself. The universal collection urges its consumers to become performers possessing the means of a better understanding of the world. From mere witnesses they become participants in the cultural migration across the borders of the visible and the invisible, the real and the imaginary, the natural and the artificial, the biological and the synthetic, the born and the made, the human and the inhuman. This “migration” unfolds the greatest fear of man, to become aware of his/her own fragmentation, disintegration, decomposition and death and, at the same time, his/her greatest desire: „All dreams return again and again to the only drive that has remained: to run away from the outlines of one’s own self” (Hans Belmer).

Tabula rasa (Latin, blank tablet or slate) is a work of art made up of an object-box-table divided into many sectors with the author’s body lying underneath them. There is a marker in each sector and the visitors may use it to draw, scribble, write on the separate parts of the body. Thus, each movement of the spectator/participant is a kind of dissection, objectification, categorization, description and research that directly affects the author, both physically and emotionally. The “vitality” of his body that responds, hurts, laughs, poses the question of the direct effect of the study of the “otherness” and of how its objectification can be seen as a form of violence.

The second phase of the project is to take photos of visitors’ pictographic intervention, to print them in the respective size and number of copies and to replace the live body by the artifact thus made. The print-out images transform the “reminder” of the body into a collection or into an abstract fragment.

The association with the image of the helpless, nude and cold body placed on the dissecting table, into the operation room of some of the renowned anatomists of the age of Enlightenment is related to their research of the “other” that is, not to a smaller degree, a kind of spectacle, a uncommon form of initiation, a consecration, unveiling, a ritual for the elect, who are well-defined but also competent enough to enter the imaginary and who are at the same time ready to create a basic pattern of human body related to the stereotypes of different ages. The Tabula RasaProject aims at the stereotypes of our times when many secrets of the body have been disclosed and thus it becomes increasingly emptier and artificial, a body reduced to a systematized, generalized, controlled, universalized, exteriorized, tailored, reshaped, stuffed, prosthesized, objectified thing. The issue to which I would like to draw the attention of the audience, apart from the fact that the Enlightenment scientists were the first to see the body as dissected, as a source of information, as a specimen, is that these processes actually reveal a colonial aspiration that is a practice of domination, a privilege in production of objective truths that is similar to various form of social engineering: anthropology, eugenics, euthanasia, sterilization, segregation, genocide, biotechnology, birth- and death-control.

The similarity between ourselves and the scientists from the age of the Enlightenment lies in the fact that we both face the fascination of the dread and the universal allegorical nature of anatomic images that have been extended and replaced in our times by a world without secrets, a world of naked flesh and its fragile potency broken up by the commercial, media and popular pressure. We face a weak body resembling the lost battles with Nature, evolution and policies, a body that is dependent and brittle, a body that is even unable to retain its intimacy and identity. The modern man from the late 19th century up to the present has been successfully overcoming the fantastic moral classifications of the 18th century but only to replace them with an epidermal sack, a creature of duplicates and clones and a genetic identification turned upside down. The new human design has given birth to the man-object, the man-table, the man-hybrid, the Monster, the Other.

Устройването на луксозни забавления за европейския елит през шестнадесети, седемнадесети и осемнадесети век, чрез практиките на анатомичните театри и организираните като в енциклопедични колекции фантастични, скъпоценни и редки предмети, превръща „космоса” от статично табло за съзерцание в повод за драматично изследване. Всевъзможни шкафове на куриозното (Kunstkammern, Wunderkabinet, Cabinets of curiosity), показващи минерали, гравирани скъпоценности, насекоми в кехлибар, пеперуди, мумифицирани уши от египетски бик, тухли от Вавилон, антики, медали, монети, часовници, астролаби, компаси, призми, огледала, микроскопи, телескопи, магически калейдоскопи, камери обскура, восъчни фигури, умни машини, удивителни играчки и автомати, създават това, което Самуел Куичелберг (Samuel Quicchelberg) определя в неговата „Inscriptiones vel Tituli Theatri” (1565), като световен театър (Universal theater)... В този театър на света, посетителите се любуват на различните сцени не в мрачни аудиториуми, но върху самата сцена. Универсалната колекция стимулира своите потребители да станат изпълнители, държащи средствата за по-доброто разбиране на света. От свидетели те се превръщат в участници в културната миграция през границите на видимото и невидимото, реалното и въображаемото, естественото и изкуственото, биологичното и синтетичното, роденото и направеното, човешкото и нечовешкото. В тази „миграция” е залегнал най-големия страх на човека в осъзнаването на собствената му фрагментация, дезинтеграция, разпадане и смърт и същевременно най-голямото желание: „Всички мечти се завръщат отново към единствения останал инстинкт, да избягаш от очертанията на себе си” (Ханс Белмер).

Tabula rasa (лат. - чиста, празна дъска) е произведение на изкуството, което представлява обект-кутия-маса, разделен на множество сектори, под които е разположено тялото на автора. Във всеки от секторите има маркер, с който посетителите могат да рисуват, драскат, пишат върху отделните части на тялото. По този начин всяко действие на зрителя/участника е вид дисекция, обективизация, категоризация, описание и изучаване, което афектира директно автора, физически и емоционално. „Живостта” на тялото му, което реагира, боли го, смее се, поставя въпроса за директния ефект от изследването на „другостта” и как неговата обективизация може да се разглежда като форма на насилие.

Втората фаза на проекта е заснемане на пиктографската интервенция на посетителите, разпечатването й в съответния размер и тираж и подмяна на живото тяло с получения артефакт. Тиража на изображенията превръща „остатъка” от тялото в колекция или в абстрактен фрагмент.

Асоциацията с образът на безпомощното, голо и студено тяло, поставено на масата за дисекции, в операционната зала на някои от прочутите анатомисти от Просвещението, е свързана с тяхното изследване на „другото”, което е не по-малко, някакъв вид спектакъл, една нетипична форма на инициация за посвещаване, разбулване, ритуал за избрани хора, определени, но и достатъчно компетентни да навлязат във въображаемото и в същото време готови да създадът един базисен модел на човешкото тяло, съотнесен към стереотипите на различните епохи. Проектът „Tabula rasa”, е насочен към стереотипите на нашата епоха, в която множество тайни на тялото са разкрити и толково по-празно и изкуствено става то, сведено до систематизирано, генерализирано, контролирано, универсализирано, екстериоризирано, разкроявано, прекроявано, препарирано, протезирано, обективизирано нещо. Проблемът, върху който искам да обърна внимание, е освен това, че за просвещенското научно познание тялото за първи път е видяно като дисектирано, разглеждано е като източник на информация, като екземпляр, но също така, в същността на тези процеси се крие една колониална аспирация, която е практика на доминиране, привилегия в производството на обективни истини, подобна на различни форми на социално инженерство: антропология, евгеника, евтаназия, стерилизация, сегрегация, геноцид, генетика, биотехнология, контрол върху раждането и смъртта.

Сходството между нас и учените от Просвещението е в това, че сме изправени пред фасцинацията от ужаса и универсалния алегоричен характер на анатомичните изображения, които са продължени и заменени в наши дни от свят без тайни, от гола плът и нейната чуплива потентност, разбита от комерсиалния, медиен и популярен натиск. Изправени сме лице в лице срещу едно слабо тяло, напомнящо за изгубените битки с природата, еволюцията и политиките, зависимо и крехко, дори неспособно да запази своята интимност и идентичност. Модерният човек от края на ХІХ-ти век до днес, успешно преодолява фантастичните морални класификации на ХVІІІ-ти век, но само, за да ги замести с един епидермален чувал, творение от дубликати и клонинги и една обърната наопаки генетична легитимация. Новият човешки дизайн роди човека-предмет, човека-маса, човека-хибрид, Чудовището, Другия.

Свързвам инсталацията с антиутопична идея, представа за бъдещето, в която светът започва да се конструира по механичен начин като пространство, възникнало вследствие на вече натрупан опит от предмети и възприятия. И когато тези фактори придобият конкретен образ, провокират към общуване, което се осъществява чрез визуално и словесно въздействие. Парадоксът се крие във факта, че този контакт води до отчуждение, но не на субекта от произведението, а по-скоро представената реалност се оттегля в някаква абстракция. Това провокира различен поглед върху нея и собствената ти идентичност. Тъй като бях предварително запознат с историята на Фантомата, не съм типа зрител, който може да се срещне на чисто с него като артефакт, но усещането, което ми предостави, беше именно поглед върху самия себе си през друга призма.

Да се говори за подобни преживявания винаги е много рисковано, защото те самите разчитат на неговорене, на много индивидуално преживяване. Моето любопитство беше свързано с името на автора, когото познавам като сценограф. Преди време в залите на Шипка 6 имах възможността да видя прототипа на Фантомата. Инсталацията представлява десет минути, през които се вглеждаш в усещането за любимите места, в морето, в дъжда, в движението и рефлексите. Преживяване, чрез което надникваш в едни очи, в които по някакъв начин се оглеждат и твоите.

Phantomat - is coined from two words: Phantom and Automat. Phantom derives from the greek word phantasma and it means a shadow of a being, apparition, ilusion, a sole. In platonic terms it means the image of reality after it has been distorted by our 5 senses.
The idea about the phantomats was born in Skegness where we wittnessed how almost the whole community (from all ages children to elderly) where possesed by the penny arcade culture. One person infront of one machine, doing repetitive motions, in silence, not communicating with other people. The machine reduces the subject to a machine. The machine is always the winner, the reduced subject is always the looser with no prospects of change. For us this was an extreme example of alienation in an extreme comersialised public space. The absense of public art and public spaces for relaxation and contemplation added to this sensation. The only place in Skegness that offered an alternative was the beach and the sea which were almost always empty.

The idea of the phantomat was born from the need to sabotage the comercilised space by using its own rules of the game but offer contemplation, reconnection with the city and with oneself.

The project consist of a series of humanoid looking machines (Phantomats) that operate on the principle of the penny arcade machines. The difference is that once you pay a penny to this machine you are always a winner. The idea is to install the Phantomats in a specificly chosen place in each touring city. The audience will have the chance to go from one to the other in a specific route that is guided by phantomats themselves. Each Phantomat will have a certain audio visuel content related to the acctual place the phantomat is situated in. The content will vary from place to place and it will realate in a different way in each situation (city or location). The content can consist of images, interviews with local people, sounds, music and the same can be distorted orm anipulated. The video material will be shown in the eyes on each Phanotmat. We are still considering whether to have headphones for the audio part or have the sound come out from speakers.The last Phantomat does no have a video material but a camera thatprojects on the screen everything that comes on its way in real time. The idea is to have the image of the person standing infront of the Phanotmat projected in the eyes of the Phantomat. A mirroring, a reconection.

Човешкото тяло е механизъм за трансформации, то е 24-часова трансформационна кутия. Човешкото тяло е мястото където се сливат два потока – този на мисълта и другият на действието. То е място за сливане на идея и форма, трансцендентно и веществено, абстракция и предмет, невъзможното и опита за постигането му. В срещата на тези два потока се случва смесване, срастване, съединение, стопяване, сливане, свързване, събиране, стичане, синтез между всеки един от елементите на съществуващото – мисленото и немисленото. Тялото генерира и пренася смисли. Можем да го тълкуваме, като преобразувател, превключвател и преносител. Тялото може да се разбира и употребява.

Human body is a mechanism for transformation. It is 24 hour transformational box. Human body is a place for fusion of idea and form, transcendent and immanent, abstraction and object, impossible and an attempt for its achievement. In this place on witch this two streams meat the elements mix, grew together, unite, melt together, flow and connect. Body is generating and transmitting meaning. We can understand it as transformer or a broadcaster. Body can be grasped and used.

SubHuman Performance е създаден през 2005 година. Тогава е представен за първи и последен път на фестивала „Изкуство в безтегловност”, организиран от Център за култура и дебат „Червената къща”, с финансовата подкрепа на Швейцарската културна програма в България.

Повторното изпълнение на този пърформанс, след две години, за нас (членовете на SubHuman Theatre) подразбира и неговото повторно преосмисляне и позициониране.

В желанието да продължим артикулацията и интерпретацията на пърформанса SubHuman, в новото му представяне той придобива и нова формална структура към вербална авторефлексия спрямо основните предпоставки изведени в първоначалната работа, но и отнесени към най-новите проекти на SubHuman Theatre.

SubHuman-Performing the notion функционира, като художествено-теоретичен пърформанс, в който участват членовете на SubHuman Theatre – Ана Виленица, Венелин Шурелов и Фантомат.

I have recently started using video in my work & when i attended a lecture by Venelin where he asked for students to take part in a week long workshop using video, i jumped at the chance. Working with other students during the week, coming up with ideas & filming them was a way of working that i really enjoyed & responded to well. For my video i decided to film aspects of a road crossing, finally coming up with the 'green' & 'red' man shots. Then in the opposite eye words that are either, static or movement words. With this the beeping of the crossing is the only audio in the video which can be hear when the green man is shown. The images were captured using a digital camera so the quality of the image is low & pixelated which is something else that i am looking at at the moment. Overall it was a really fun week that helped me to develop my ideas in other aspects of my art work.

Инсталацията SubChat се базира на теста на Тюринг. Целта на този тест е да се определи дали дадена компютърна програма има интелект. SubHuman Theatre представя един разговор между две "същества", които са се срещнали в опосредена среда. Единият от участниците в този чат е чатбот или изкуствен интелект, който е натрупал речника си по време на срещите с различни партньори през годините. Можете ли да познаете кой от участниците е действително съществуващия човек и кой – чатботът? Има ли значение дали можем да разпознаем дадена машина онлайн? Проблем ли е, ако объркаме някой човек с програма?

Докато виртуалният свят се развива, за да обхване всички аспекти на живота ни и онлайн взаимодействията оформят общностите ни, свойството да си „реален”, се превръща в обществен проблем.

С инсталацията SubChat, SubHuman Theatre не желае да изрази скептицизъм по отношение на феномена изкуствен интелект, но по скоро да обърне внимание върху потенциала на този вид комуникация за критическа преоценка на настоящето и предстоящето.

With SubHuman Curiosity, Shurelov is exploring curiosity. Curiosity describes behavioral and psychological mechanisms that impel beings to seek information and interaction with their environment and with other beings. In this way curiosity becomes a synonym for society.

Shurelov has placed a black box on the ground of his marketplace. The content is unknown and is doubly protected: by the box and by a circle of tall, closely knit anthropoid wooden figures who crowd around it, preventing passers by from approaching the box. To satisfy their curiosity, people must circle round these figures in order to find a gap.

So, what’s inside the mystery box – something untouchable, a forgotten memory, something dangerous, expensive, tasty, nothing?

Human curiosity evokes thoughts and actions, and, combined with the ability to think in an abstract way, leads to mimesis, fantasy and imagination – eventually even to the destruction of boundaries, to distinguishing oneself and to distancing oneself from the crowd.
